My fascination with cultural landscapes stems from my career as a landscape architect a love of sailing, which draws me to the water. I am an Urban Sketcher and member of the Wolfe Island Gallery.
This project has served as a way to meet members of the Wolfe Island community and is offered in the hopes of creating awareness of the key elements that contribute to the intrinsic character of Marysville. Additionally, its may provide a minor alternative to the Wolfe Island Gallery, which is closed this summer. |
Subjects and Techniques
This project started with a new sketchbook and an attraction to Wolfe Island and Marysville and the ferry rides to and from the Island. I spend many days through the winter and spring of 2020 driving the various "lines"and sketching from the car, with no real goal in mind for the drawings.
As an urban sketcher I regard a sketchbook as a "piece", as opposed to studies in preparation for some more considered work. Unfortunately, sketchbooks are small and don't lend themselves to display. That, along with news that the Wolfe Island Gallery would not be opening this summer, lead to the idea of using Main Street as a gallery. I hope this exhibit starts a conversation about village character with residents and provides a minor attraction for visitors. The sketches were re-drawn on tyvek building wrap using a latex ink marker. I worked quickly, standing up and using course lines to try to capture the energy and brevity of the original tiny sketches. |
